Excerpt From My Book About Toby

I wrote a book about my friend Toby several years ago. I posted it here chapter by chapter a few years back. Here is an excerpt from the book.

Chapter 3

Toby always was a really playful dog.  He was always looking for and ready to have a good time.  That quality made us quite compatible.
As I mentioned in a previous chapter, I first bonded with Toby through a game of fetch with some old kite string.  Fetch became an important part of our play time, but we did graduate to better items than kite string.
The first toy I bought Toby was a small, green alligator.  When I unwrapped the package and gave the gator a sharp squeak, I captured Toby's undivided attention.  His ears stood up more than usual, and he starred intently at this small noisemaker.
I took the gator and flung it as far as possible across the living room.  Toby dashed after it, pounced on it, and set down to have a good long chew.  He never would return a thrown object back to me.  I would come over to get the gator, and a tug of war ensued.  As always, Toby acquiesced.  With that, our modified game of fetch resumed.  We could play like this for hours.  Finally, both of us would end up breathless from to much gator chasing.
Toby liked to play with his gator at all times.  He'd squeak it, chew it and fetch it.  Whenever I said, "It's gator time" he knew instantly what that meant.
I bought Toby several other chew toys over the years.  He had a rubber tennis shoe, a squeaky carrot and some other toys.  Toby never liked these toys as much as his well worn gator.  We played with that old swamp dweller until it finally fell apart.  Sadly, I could never find another gator exactly like it again.
After gator died, Toby got into the habit of tearing his toys apart, so I didn't leave them out for him all of the time.   One time, I bought him a little rubber beef steak to play with.  The minute I gave it to him he ripped it apart and tried to eat it.  I guess he thought that it was the real thing.
Besides playing gator, Toby and I engaged in other fun activities like racing.  It was one of our favorite things to do in Toby's younger days.  Out in the backyard, my uncle had an old bathtub that we used as the starting point of our races.  My Mom acted as the referee and official race starter.  Toby and I would stand in anticipation waiting for the signal to cruise to the finish line marked by the rose trellises at the end of the yard.  I always had to hold Toby back as he always tried to gain the advantage.
When Mom said, "go", we were off and running as fast as possible.  Neither of us wanted to let the other win.  Unfortunately for me, Toby won the majority of these races.  For a little dog, he was lightning fast.  I never would have thought such stubby legs could move so fast.
Toby had a unique running style.  He didn't move his front and back legs in synchrony as most dogs.  Instead, Toby threw both of this front legs out, and then pushed himself along with both back legs.    It was sort of a bouncing and pouncing motion that looked awkward, but it produced a great deal of speed.
Toby didn't just race me though.  He liked to race through the house as motorcycles sped down the street in front of the house.
At one time, before they were outlawed, three-wheeled motorcycles were  popular where I live.  The kids would ride fast and loud down the streets and alleys of my community.  These motorcycles drove Toby crazy.  He tried to chase these roaring vehicles down even though he was safe inside the house.
My house was a long, ranch house that allowed a dog to make a straight shot from end to end without hindrance.  When Toby heard the motorcycles coming, he would start barking, jump to his feet and dash from one end of the house to the other.  In one great leap, he would jump on the chair by the big picture window and bark and growl at this hated nemesis.
Thankfully, this all ended when the motorcycles were banned.  Toby was relieved that this was all over, and so was I.
While Toby grew to feeble to play fetch much or race, one game we played right until the end was the most fun of all.  Toby possessed a great sense of smell, and his tracking ability could put a bloodhound to shame.
The way we tested Toby's tracking was by playing hide and seek indoors and outdoors.  My Mom would distract Toby while I went and hid somewhere.  After I was thoroughly hidden, Mom would say to Toby," Go find Garry", and Toby would be off in search of me.
Toby always found me.  After a brief glance to see if I was in view, Toby put his nose to the ground and started sniffing out my scent.  From my secure vantage point, I would watch him following my exact track right up to my carefully chosen hiding place.  When he found me, he would jump up and down with excitement.  I really believe that with a little training, Toby could have won some prizes in the AKC tracking competitions.
Toby loved to play, and I loved to play with him.  We were always trying to think up new ways to have fun.  Toby grew too old to play some of our games, but even when he reached his teens, he was very active and ready to go.
Don't let anyone tell you that older dogs have no energy or can't learn.  Toby proved that even when they have grown old, dogs still want to play and have a good time.  Give an older dog a chance, and he will become your best friend.

Weekend Sermon -- I Thessalonians 2:1-16

Thank you for reading the sermon this week. I was not able to post anything for awhile due to the fact that I've been very sick. I thank the Lord that I am doing much better now. I hope that you are all doing well.

Before I had to take a break due to illness, we had been in the midst of a study in the book of I Thessalonians. We made it through the first chapter, and we will cover most of chapter 2 in today's message.

One of the things we learned is that Paul's ministry to the people in Thessalonica is covered in the book of Acts. As he mentions in our text today, Paul and his ministry companions faced opposition in their ministry in Thessalonica. However, there were people in the city who were receptive to the message Paul was bringing, and they believed in the Lord Jesus Christ.

What I want to focus on today is how Paul speaks about the way that he and his companions ministered to the people. It is a pattern for those in ministry to follow today.

First of all, Paul said that they were working to please God and not people. That should be the first priority of anyone who is preaching the Gospel. Those of us who preach and teach are called by God to bring His Word to others. We have the obligation to preach as we are led by the Holy Spirit. We are not simply to preach what people want to hear.

I have an example of this from my ministry here on the blog. Some of you may remember that a couple of years ago I went through a series of messages on the book of Malachi. Malachi has some hard things within it that some people don't want to hear. I lost a lot of sermon readers while I was going through that series. However, I knew then that God wanted me to bring those messages at that time.

In verse 5, Paul said that they were not ministering out of greed. This is very true of the Apostle Paul. He worked as a tent maker in order to support himself in the ministry. He wasn't preaching in order to enrich himself. He knew that this world was not the place in which to lay up treasure. He was more interested in laying up treasure in heaven as we are instructed by the Lord Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount.

In our day and age, many Christian ministers are giving the church a bad reputation because they are seen by those who are not in the church as being motivated by money. This is really causing a lot of people to not want to become Christians. It needs to stop.

In verses 7 through 12, Paul tells of how he cared for those in the church in Thessalonica as a parent would care for their children. Part of his ministry was to encourage the people to keep living for Jesus in the midst of hardships and persecutions. His ministry included comforting the people in times of sorrow and loss. That is a big part of what a good minister needs to do today. We have to be there when people need us. We have to provide the comforting words of the Savior to those who are going through difficulties. Also, Paul urged the people to live for Jesus. He wanted their lives to count for both time and for eternity.

The people responded positively to Paul's ministry. They imitated the life of Christ even in the midst of persecution. That is what it truly means to be a Christian. It means that we imitate what Jesus did. We seek to follow His teachings and commandments and to be His light to illuminate the darkness that is in this world. Amen.

Prayer Requests

I am doing a lot better, but I am still very fatigued. Please pray that I will continue to feel better in the coming days.

Please continue to pray for an end to the coronavirus and monkeypox outbreaks. Pray that those who are sick will recover quickly.

We need to pray for those suffering as a result of the floods in Pakistan. Pray that they will receive that aid that they need. We also need to keep praying for those in Kentucky who are still dealing with the aftermath of the floods.

Continue to pray for peace. Libya, Ukraine, Ethiopia and Yemen all need our prayers.

For our prayer focus countries this week, let us pray for those who live in the nations of Mauritania and Uzbekistan. Pray that many will come to know Jesus.

Next week, we will continue in our current study. I will post the verses on Monday, and I hope to post something midweek. May God bless you all.

Weekend Sermon -- I Thessalonians -- 1:4-10

Thank you for reading the sermon this week. I hope that you are doing well and that everyone is in good health.

Last week, we began a new series of messages on the book of I Thessalonians. We dealt with an introduction to the book, and then we studied the first few verses of this epistle. Today, we will finish up chapter 1 of this book.

The first thing that Paul points out in our section today is that when he and his companions preached to the people in Thessalonica, the message came to them with the power of the Holy Spirit. The people of the city heard the message of the Lord, and they felt a deep conviction of sin within their hearts. Our section tells us in verse nine that they abandoned the idols that they formerly worshipped, and they turned to the worship of the Living God.

What I would like to point out is that the only way that a person can have a successful ministry in preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to preach in the power of the Holy Spirit. We are called by the Lord to spread His message. According to the Bible, some people plant the seed. Others water. But it is God who gives the increase. Only the working of the power of the Spirit bringing conviction within a person's heart will bring that person to salvation. As the Word says, it is not by might, nor by power but by the Spirit of the Lord that anything is accomplished for the glory of the Lord.

Paul goes on to say that after the people came to faith in Jesus Christ, they became imitators of  Paul and companions and the Lord. They followed Paul in what he taught and in how he lived because he was follow in the path and in the teachings of the Lord Jesus. This is one thing that we must always keep in mind. We must ultimately always keep our eyes fixed upon Jesus. He is our ultimate example of how to live in this world. He is the author and the perfecter of our faith. If we get our eyes off of Jesus, we will end up in trouble.

We should only follow a person as an example of faith if that person's actions line up with the life and teachings of Jesus. Many people put their trust in and look to a person. When that person falls by the wayside so to speak, many leave the faith because they become disenchanted. If we keep out eyes on Jesus and follow Him, we will never be disappointed, and we will never be led astray.

The way that we follow Jesus is to do what He did in the Gospels. We need to practice His way of living and follow His commandments and teachings. We must always consider what Jesus would do in the situations that we encounter in this life.

Because of the way that the Thessalonians lived in keeping with the Word of the Lord, their lives became an example to others throughout the region. People saw their faithfulness to the Lord, and they were encourages to live for the Lord and serve Him. Our lives are to be lived in such a way that we are an example to others. When people see us, they need to see Jesus living in us. Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, that others are to see our good works and give glory to the Father in Heaven.

Finally, Paul commends the people because they are waiting for the day when Jesus will return. That is the blessed hope of all of those who put their faith and trust in Jesus. One day He will return, and He will make all things new. Let us all look to Jesus and live for Him until that great and glorious day. Amen.

Prayer Requests.

I am doing somewhat better with my health, but I am still having a lot of pain. Please continue to pray for me. Thank you for your prayers.

Continue to pray for an end to the coronavirus and the monkeypox. Pray that those who are sick will make a speedy recovery.

Pray for those affected by the flooding in Kentucky. Pray that they will receive the aid that they need.

Let us keep praying for peace in Israel, Syria, Yemen, Libya, Ukraine and the other areas of the world where there is conflict.

For our prayer focus countries, let us pray for those in the nations of North Korea and Ivory Coast. Pray that many will come to know Jesus.

Next week, we will continue in our study of I Thessalonians. On Monday, I will post the verses. I hope to post something midweek. May God bless you all.

Poem

This is a poem I wrote that was published in a literary journal a few years ago.

The Barn

Ragged and torn,
the vestiges of time
took their toll.

Crooked and bent,
wind whipped
by a mighty gale.

Faded and peeling,
scorched dry
waiting for the end.

Weekend Sermon -- I Thessalonians -- Introduction

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and read the sermon this week. I hope that you are all doing well. I thank the Lord for allowing me to post this message today.

Last week, we finished our series on the prophet Elijah. Today, we are going to start a new series of messages. If you've followed the blog for awhile, you know that from time to time, I like to do a book study. We go through a book of the Bible chapter by chapter and verse by verse to learn what God has to say to us. We are going to start a study of the book of I Thessalonians this week and continue until we are through with the book.

I want to start today with an introduction. There is a great deal of debate among Bible scholars as to how many of the epistles that bear his name the Apostle Paul actually wrote. I believe that he was the author of all of them, but some believe that he only wrote about half of them. This is one thing to know about I Thessalonians, I've not found one Bible scholar liberal or conservative who doesn't believe that Paul wrote this epistle.

I Thessalonians was probably the first book of the New Testament that was written. Many believe that it was penned by Paul in the late 40s to early 50s AD. Now there are a few Bible scholars that believe that Galatians was written first, and a few believe that James was written first. Let's say this. I Thessalonians was written early on probably about 20 years after Jesus ascended to Heaven.

Thessalonians is a letter addressed to those who were in the church that Paul started in the Greek city of Thessalonica. We can read a little about Paul's time there in Acts 17:1-9. Paul started his ministry in the city by going to the synagogue on three consecutive Sabbaths to explain to the people that Jesus was the Messiah. He died and rose again from the dead. As a result of the ministry of Paul and Silas, several people in the city came to faith in Jesus. Eventually, opposition rose to the ministry of Paul. He had to leave in order to minister elsewhere. However, the church remained.

Today, we will look at verses 1 and 2 that state, "Paul, Silas and Timothy to the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace and peace to you. We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. We remember before our God and Father, your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ."

I want to focus on two things. First of all. Paul mentions their labor prompted by love. In the book of I Corinthians, Paul lets us know that if we do anything without our work being motivated by love, our labor is worthless. This was not the case with the believers in the church in Thessalonica. They had love for God, love for one another and love for others. They were working to bring other people to faith in Jesus, and they were ministering to one another because they had the love of Jesus in their hearts.

The second thing that I want to focus on is the phrase endurance inspired by hope. I find that it is often hard to keep going in this life. It seems that there are a lot of hardships. It is often difficult to follow Jesus in the midst of a lot of the sinfulness that is going on in this world. I also have faced a lot of sickness and other problems lately. Sometimes it is hard to keep going. However, I can and we all can keep going because we have hope in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus had died, Jesus has risen, and Jesus will come again. No matter what is going on in our lives right now, we know that one day Jesus will make all thing new. We also know that when we die, that is not the end. If we believe in Him, we will be with Him in the place that He had prepared for us. We can rest in the assurance that Jesus will never leave us nor forsake us. Nothing can ever separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.

We are just getting started in this epistle. In the weeks to come, we will look in to more of what the Lord has to teach us from I Thessalonians. Amen.

Prayer Requests

I have a few things that I would like you to pray about. I am having some serious health issues. I found out a couple of weeks ago that I have spinal degeneration and grade 3 of 4 arthritis in my back hips and sacroiliac joints. I am having quite a bit of pain that is making it hard for me to do my job. Please pray for me that I can get to feeling at least a little better. Also, please pray that I can make it through this terrible humid weather. It is starting to make my asthma bad. Thank you for your prayers.

Please pray for those in Kentucky affected by the flooding. It is a terrible situation. Please pray that the people will be able to get the assistance that they need at this time.

Someone I know in Japan who has corgis is sick. Please pray that he will recover.

Pray that coronavirus and monkeypox will stop. Pray that those who are sick will recover.

Continue to pray for an end to the war in Ukraine. We also need to pray for peace in Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, Ethiopia and other areas where there is conflict.

For our prayer focus countries this week, let us all pray for those living in Taiwan and Brunei. Pray that many will come to know Jesus.

Next week, we will continue in our study. I will post the verses on Monday. I hope to post something midweek, but I will have to see. May God bless you all. Amen.

Jeremiah 17:7 -- "But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him."
